The history of prechel.net

My first experience with web design was a few years ago. Towards the end of the summer of 2002, I was asked to update the website for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Department of Geology. Although I didn't know html at the time, I quickly learned the basics and was on my way.

Once my parents found out that I was learning web design, I ended up making a few web pages showcasing our dog Dana. The pages needed a place to be stored, so 20m.com gained a new addition: dooger.20m.com. Dana is better known as Dooger, hence the site's name.

With new web space to fill, I decided to create a few more web pages. So in addition to the web page containing pictures of Dana, a couple other pages and links were added to doooger.20m.com. However, since 20m is a free web space provider, an advertising banner graced the top of every page at dooger.20m.com, and several pop-up ads tagged along. Thus my hunt for a better web space provider began, although I didn't devote much time to the hunt.

I found what I was looking for in the Eau Claire chapter of the Student Association for Computing Machinery (SACM). I am a student at UW-Eau Claire, and I heard about SACM in an introductory computer science course. I attended one of SACM's introductory meetings, and decided to join.

As part of my membership in SACM, I received a generous amount of space on a Linux server named blackhole. Since blackhole supported http, some of the pages from dooger.20m underwent a few updates, changed locations, and became the basis for blackhole.cs.uwec.edu/~precherd.

Unfortunately, towards the end of the fall 2002 semester, blackhole crashed. Since the computer was not going to be fixed until the following semester, my hunt for web space began again. This time I focused my attention on my own domain. After about a week of deliberating, on December 16, 2002, I purchased the domain prechel.net and went about updating and transferring my existing web pages to their current home.

I currently update the contents of prechel.net occasionally. I hope you enjoy your visit at prechel.net. To return to this homepage, click on the image at the bottom of each page.
